Here are the results of the next three presidential elections. As a rule, “bordering” includes single-point borders and water borders.
2016:
Final Result: Democrats 211, Republicans 327
- All states added in the first half of the 20th century went to the same party, while all states added in the second half of the 20th century went to the other party.
- All states bordering West Virginia voted Democrat.
- All states whose names are the end of another state's name voted Democrat.
- Among Wyoming's neighbors, the delegate counts for the Republican states and the delegate counts for the Democratic states both form 3-term arithmetic progressions, and Wyoming itself voted the same as the progression with the larger common difference.
- California, Texas, and all of New England went in the opposite direction of how they've gone in the past 12 years.
- Everywhere that Marco Rubio won during the 2016 primaries voted Republican.
- Half the states with "New" in their name went to each party.
- If Colorado voted Democrat, then so did Idaho.
- If Nevada voted Republican, then so did Indiana.
- If Tennessee voted Republican, then Georgia and Florida voted Democrat.
- States with a cardinal direction in their name went to the same party as other states with the same direction in their name.
- The states with 11 electoral votes are not split evenly between the parties.
- The thirteen states bordering Canada gave a total of 48 delegates to the Democrats.
2020:
Final Result: Democrats 359, Republicans 179
- All of New England flipped allegiance, but all states bordering New England were consistent with 2016.
- All states added in the second half of the 20th century flipped between 2016 and 2020.
- Among the Four Corners states, the same number voted Democrat as in 2016.
- East of the Mississippi River, all states bordering Tennessee voted Republican.
- If Idaho voted Democrat, then so did Oklahoma.
- In 2016, there was a north-to-south line of at least four states who all voted the same. Now, as one moves north to south along this same line, party allegiance alternates.
- Only one of the top four states, sorted by number of electoral college votes, voted Republican.
- There is a Democratic state with 6 electoral votes all of whose neighbors voted Democrat as well, but all of its neighbors' neighbors with a multiple of 3 electoral votes voted Republican.
- Three Republican states are all pairwise adjacent, and their numbers of electoral votes form a geometric sequence with common factor ≠1.
- West of the Mississippi River, the Republicans won 7 states but received only 39 electoral votes (this includes states that the Mississippi runs through, as long as part of the state is west of the river).
2024:
Final Result: Democrats 154, Republicans 384
- All of Alabama's neighbors voted the same as one another.
- All of New England flipped allegiance (again), but all states bordering New England were consistent with 2020 (again), and all states added in the second half of the 20th century flipped (again).
- All of the top 6 states in number of electoral votes, with the exception of Illinois, voted the same as one another.
- Among Kansas and its borders, the total electoral votes given to the Democrats is one more than the total given to Republicans.
- Among states with “New” in their name, the number of Republican states is different from the number of Democratic states.
- Every state with a two-word name voted the same as every other state with the same last word in its name.
- Florida's neighbors voted the same as in 2020.
- Kentucky, along with exactly one neighbor, voted Republican.
- The Eastern Seaboard gave the Democrats 37 electoral votes.
- The thirteen states bordering Canada gave the Democrats 25 electoral votes.
- There is a Republican state with 6 electoral votes all of whose neighbors voted Democrat.
