Note on Mind Q & A

Mathcamp students who, after repeated requests, did not put nametags on their own doors had nametags made for them by Mathcamp staff. Unbeknownst to them, these nametags formed this puzzle. The names on these fake tags (of which there were roughly 50) differed from the students' actual names in each of seven different possible ways:

• letter L omitted (e.g. DILIP -> DIIP)
• letter E replaced by letter L (e.g. DANIEL -> DANILL)
• beheaded (e.g. MATTHEW -> ATTHEW)
• letter K added in front (e.g. FRANK -> KFRANK)
• reversed (e.g. HAMOON -> NOOMAH)
• letters A and C were switched (e.g. CLARA -> ALARC, GRACE -> GRCAE)
• letter S replaced by letter B (e.g. JASON -> JABON)

The first five types of nametags were written on red, orange, yellow, green, and blue construction paper, respectively.
